Current UK guide

UK VAT rates at a glance

The UK has three VAT rates. Which rate applies depends on the exact product or service and, in some cases, how it is supplied or used.

RateCommon examples
Standard20%Most goods and services, petrol and diesel, adult clothing and restaurant meals.
Reduced5%Domestic gas, electricity and heating fuel, plus children’s car seats and some other qualifying items.
Zero0%Most food, books and newspapers, children’s clothes and shoes, and qualifying safety helmets.
Energy is a useful exception to know.

Domestic fuel and power are generally charged at 5%. Fuel and power for business use, and electricity supplied at public EV charging points, are generally charged at 20%.

Zero-rated and exempt are not the same. A zero-rated sale is still taxable, but at 0%. Exempt supplies follow different VAT and input-tax rules.
